Pre1 Powers Publishing With FileMakerChoosing a database platform is a critical decision for a small ISV. Pre1 Software has found success by offering publishing solutions based on a FileMaker Server core. "FileMaker Server has provided a significant competitive advantage. We've built a robust product in a few short years, and can develop at a more rapid rate than otherwise," said Mark Jockin, Pre1 general manager. The company's SmartPublisher product family integrates CRM and ad management, billing and accounts recievable, and print and web publishing tools into a customizable package. "In publishing, there's no hard and fast business structure--no standardization between the way one organization works and another one does," says Jockin. "We have challenges with version control--trying to deliver up to the minute software" while supporting many different configurations. "The tradeoffs [using FileMaker] are significantly to our advantage." Located in Portland, Oregon, Pre1 is a reseller for FileMaker, Netopia, Em Software and others, and part of the Apple, Adobe and Filemaker developer programs. With customers throughout North and South America, Jockin says the company's primary method of attracting new customers is through existing referrals. "One thing that's given us the ability to expand is providing top noch, personalized customer support," he added. What choices do you make with databases? Let me know.
