The Daily App: Net Scan For Android

You'll never walk blindly into a customer site as long as you have your Android smartphone and today's daily app. Heck, you might even walk out with a few extra shackles. Net Scan by Nick Circelli is a free app for Android phones and tablets that explores the network around it and discovers and reports device names, IP addresses, MAC addresses, open ports and other network vulnerabilities.

When first launching, Net Scan performs an initial scan and after about 15 seconds reports its own IP and MAC address, plus the MAC address and SSID of the access point to which it's attached. Buttons at the bottom of the screen initiate a complete scan or bring up the device's WiFi controls for switching access points or other settings.

After a complete scan, the main list displays IP and MAC addresses of each found device along with its device name (if there is one) or the unit's NIC manufacturer. Tapping on a device presents a prompt for a quick or thorough port scan. The latter allows you to select a range of ports (default is one through 1024) and then lists of the device's open ports, with further links when possible. For example, when port 80 is in use, tapping here will point a browser the device's web page or login screen.

Updated in February to version 1.4.4, Net Scan now works on GoogleTV, Kindle Fire and devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
