iPhone 3.0: More Memory, Faster Processor, Cooler Camera?

According to reports from MacRumors, the next iteration of Apple's iPhone could be getting an upgrade in storage to 32 GB and a faster processor as well. The reports come from a source posting to the Chinese Web forum Weiphone.

In addition to greater storage capacity, the source claims that the coming announcement at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) will include a 600MHz CPU speed, up from 400MHz on previous versions of the iPhone, MacRumors reports.

The RAM on the device will get a boost as well, reports say, jumping from 128 MB to 256 MB. A digital compass will apparently also be included in the update. Meanwhile, no major changes to the battery, screen or external casing are expected to be rolled out.

One detail that is causing quite a bit of buzz in the blogosphere is a potential upgrade to the camera. The source on Weiphone claims that iPhone 3.0 will get a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus. The quality—or lack thereof—of the camera on the mobile device has been a sore spot among users since the hardware was launched in 2007.

Again, it's worth noting that the claims made on the Chinese forum about the impending Apple iPhone upgrades come from a source that, as MacRumors puts it, "has no track record for accurate information."

Still, these rumors don't seem too far outside the realm of possibility for the upcoming hardware refresh that Apple is expected to unveil in June.
