Informatica To Offer Link To Hadoop-Based Systems Through Cloudera Deal

Informatica is extending the reach of its data integration software to Hadoop-based data management software under an alliance with Cloudera, the two companies said Monday.

Informatica said the development partnership would make Apache Hadoop, the open-source framework for building distributed, data-intensive applications, available to a wider audience of customers and solution providers.

Businesses today are struggling with the need to derive value from rapidly growing volumes of structured and unstructured data, generated by everything from online retail systems to social networks. Technology developed through the Informatica-Cloudera alliance will help businesses collect, manage and analyze such data.

"We believe it's going to be very revolutionary for our customers. It's really the new data frontier," said Ash Kulkarni, general manager of enterprise data integration. Kulkarni was speaking in an interview prior to the start of the company's Informatica World 2010 customer conference in Washington D.C.

An increasing number of businesses and organizations are adopting the Hadoop technology to build applications that can run across networks of inexpensive servers. Hadoop is proving especially popular for developing data analysis applications that require lots of number-crunching capacity.

Next: The Informatica-Cloudera Link

Cloudera provides a commercial implementation of Hadoop. Linking information in a Cloudera system with Informatica's data integration platform will provide a way for Informatica users to gain value from huge volumes of structured and unstructured data.

Informatica and Cloudera have begun developing the technology that will allow customers to develop their data models within their Informatica system and run them as data mappings on Cloudera's Hadoop-based system. Today developing such links requires a great deal of custom development work. Kulkarni said the two companies would announce a delivery date for the integration technology shortly.
