In addition to those changes, Microsoft plans to build in existing and future security patches and critical updates to the service pack as well as code to support emerging Mira, Freestyle PC and Tablet PC technologies.

It is the first service pack that will be released following the shipment of Windows XP in October 2001.

At the 2002 International Consumer Electronics Show in January, Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates previewed an early version of a set of technologies, code-named Freestyle, which includes a new user interface to enable consumers to access their music, videos and photos from anywhere in the room.

Freestyle, for example, will allow Windows XP to deliver new TV experiences on the PC.

Gates also debuted a set of Windows CE .Net-based technologies, code-named Mira, designed to be included in a new generation of smart display devices such as detachable, wireless mobile flat-screen monitors and digital televisions.

The Windows XP service pack will offer support for these technologies as well as for its forthcoming Tablet PC OS.
