Wyse Unveils New Thin-Client Technologies

The company, based here, introduced a new software application that executives said can boost thin-client application performance. Also new is a wireless thin client aimed at mobile applications.

The software application, Wyse Expedian, works with Windows Terminal Services and Citrix MetaFrame to increase the performance of thin-client applications by between 30 percent and 40 percent, said Brad Rowland, director of product management for the company.

If customers wanted to increase the number of users who can run an application, solution providers could also use Wyse Expedian to increase that number by between 30 percent and 40 percent, Rowland said.

To achieve the boost in performance or number of users, Wyse Expedian reduces excess use of computing resources in a thin client environment, Rowland said.

"In the Windows Terminal Services environment, users run multiple copies of an application. In many applications, the server may run multiple copies of a software component simultaneously in memory," he said. "When the server runs out of RAM, it moves some of those components to the hard drive, and swings them back and forth. This software manages the application so there is no duplication of resources or components."

The design of the software makes it suitable for applications such as CRM that might require up to 40 Mbytes of memory per user, Rowland said. For other applications such as Microsoft Exchange, which require only a few Mbytes of memory per user, the performance gain is much less, he said.

The software carries a list price of $699 per server for servers with up to two processors, $999 for up to four processors, and $2,999 for up to eight processors.

On the wireless side, Wyse unveiled its Winterm 3820TX tablet thin client for customers with mobile applications.

The 3820TX comes with a 12.2-inch LCD touch screen, the CalliGrapher handwriting-recognition software, a virtual keyboard, Windows CE, 32 Mbytes of memory, and support for Microsoft RDP and Citrix ICA resident communications protocols, Rowland said.

Wyse had tried the wireless thin-client market in the past and is now re-entering the market with better due to a lot of buzz about the Microsoft-specified Tablet PC and the Mira devices, Rowland said. "Tablet PC and Mira marketing is good for us," he said. "They essentially set the market for our devices."

The list price of the 3820TX is $1,499.
