HP Brings Ex-Dell Exec To Run Server Marketing

Peter Evans

Hewlett-Packard has shuffled its server division executive ranks with the appointment of a recent Dell executive to handle server marketing.

Ganthier is now running HP's global program to help customers migrate from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2012, a source close to HP told CRN off the record. That source called the Windows Server 2003 migration a one-in-a-decade multibillion-dollar opportunity for the company.

The shuffle in the server division, first reported by the online news site Re/code, gives HP the opportunity to bring new talent to its server division as it prepares for this year's major ProLiant Generation 9 server platform refresh.

Evans, who as of Friday has yet to update his LinkedIn profile on the move from Dell to HP, has until recently served as chief marketing officer for Enterprise Solutions at Dell.

An HP spokesperson confirmed via email that changes were made in the server business, but declined further comment.

A source close to Dell told CRN that Evans was replaced by longtime Dell executive Gaurav Chand, who currently serves as global vice president of marketing for Dell's Enterprise Solutions Group. Chand has been with Dell since 2000.

HP is in a long-term process of reinventing itself, a process that has resulted in the company bringing in a lot of outside talent, said Rich Baldwin, CIO and chief strategy officer at Nth Generation Computing, a San Diego-based solution provider and longtime HP partner.

Baldwin told CRN that since Meg Whitman took over as president and CEO of HP, the company has brought in several good executives, including CIO Ramon Baez; Executive Vice President of Technology and Operations John Hinshaw; Executive Vice President and General Manager of HP's Enterprise Group Bill Veghte; and Executive Vice President of HP Software Robert Youngjohns.

"I'm feeling pretty good about the senior management at HP," Baldwin said. "Meg has been bringing in highly talented people. They're getting a lot of good things done there."
