Whoa, Domino: IBM Lotus Notes Comes To iPhone
The iPhone app is dubbed IBM Lotus iNotes ultralite, and is built on the Lotus Domino Web Access infrastructure. Lotus iNotes allows users to access e-mail, calendars and contacts directly through the Apple iPhone Safari browser.
The IBM Lotus iNotes ultralite software download is available at no extra charge to users who have a Lotus Notes software license and is also included with IBM's new Lotus Notes software 8.0.2, which uses 20 percent less memory than the previous version.
Notes 8.0.2 also includes an updated version of Lotus Symphony, a document, spreadsheet and presentation software package based on the Open Document Format. The newest version of Symphony also has improved compatibility with Microsoft Office and supports 28 languages.
iPhone users can access Lotus iNotes ultralite through an interface via the Safari browser. Additionally, iPhone users can opt to use IBM's Lotus Mobile Connect virtual private network software along with ultralite for extra security and protection of corporate data.
IBM has also unveiled the new Lotus Protector for Mail Security, which protects companies from Internet-borne spam and viruses. The product is the first offering in the new Lotus Protector security family, and shields Notes and Domino systems and users from harmful and inappropriate content, and secures company data from unauthorized access, IBM said. Lotus Protector for Mail Security also features an engine with scanning and filtering techniques, and also features a rules engine to block incoming and outgoing content based on customer specifications.
