Novell's Brush With A Burning Dell Notebook (And They Say Dell's Not To Blame)
So when Utah blogger Doug McKay posted photos on his blog, along with the following description from the person who sent the photos to him, it appeared somewhat noteworthy:
McKay wrote that he got the email on July 6.
I asked Novell spokesman Kevan Barney if this was, in fact, the case. Sort of, he said, but there was more to the story.
Yes, the Dell notebook caught fire and, yes, Novell's Building D was evacuated. But a security investigator who looked into it said the person who was using the notebook inserted a non-Dell battery into the unit just before it went up. "It was not a Dell battery," Barney said.
The investigation is continuing, Barney said.
When I ran this story past a solution provider who knows quite a bit about Dell's and other notebooks, he responded that once a person inserts any old, unapproved battery into a notebook, unsafe things can happen that shouldn't be blamed on the notebook vendor.
