Are We There Yet? Check Out T-Mobile G1's New GPS System

T-Mobile G1 customers can now access full-color 3-D maps and turn-by-turn navigation to avoid traffic snafus and missed exits thanks to a partnership with TeleNav. TeleNav's GPS system includes speech recognition and traffic alerts with one-click rerouting, more than 10 million business listings, gas prices, weather updates and restaurant reviews.

In addition, the navigator can send e-mail alerts with summaries of current traffic conditions and delays on routes. Subscribers can use the My TeleNav Internet browser plug-in for Internet Explorer, Firefox or Google toolbars and send addresses to their phones from any Web page.

Yelling and cursing can also be kept to a minimum: If you miss a turn, the system automatically reroutes you to your location.

Another feature is speech recognition for both address entries and business searches. On the T-Mobile G1, customers press one button; say, the name of a business or address and TeleNav will give directions. There are more than 10 million business listings, as well as hotels, shopping malls and banks. Weather updates are also provided.

You can also find out how much you'll have to pay at the pump with gas price information. Restaurant reviews are provided as well, so you can get the cheapest gas at, say, the next rest stop and find out how delicious that Whopper is at the adjacent Burger King.

The TeleNav GPS Navigator is available for a free 30-day trial at TeleNav's Web site and for $9.99 per month for unlimited use thereafter.

Services for T-Mobile G1 users begin Feb. 24. TeleNav also plans to make the service available in the Android market sometime later this year.

Other TeleNav partners include Alltel, AT&T, Hewlett-Packard, LG, Motorola, Verizon Wireless, Nokia, Palm, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sanyo and Sprint Nextel.
