Adobe Brings PDF To XML With The Mars Project

The Mars Project

According to Adobe:

The document-format and image-management software company says, "A plug-in for Acrobat 8 is available that enables you to save PDF documents in Mars format and to open Mars documents. A plug-in is also available for Reader 8 that enables you to open Mars documents."

IBM developer Wes Felter linked to The Mars Project on his blog, and suggests it gives Adobe the opportunity to say, "XML? Yeah, we have that."

On Adobe's message board devoted to discussion of the project, one poster asked whether Mars stood for, "Meta Acrobat Reliable Software." Answered Phil Levy, a senior engineering manager at Adobe, "It is actually named after the planet."
