Are You Continuing To Spring Forward?
It’s the beginning of Q2 and the year is in full swing, ramping up to what’s next. Just a quick check-in for all the inclusive leaders.
Spring Forward: The Season Of The Slow Reset
Three months ago, I wrote a column headlined “ New Year, Same You,” in which I challenged the pressure to overhaul ourselves overnight just because the calendar turned. I shared how I’ve abandoned resolutions in favor of choosing a word or phrase to guide my year—something small, actionable, and rooted in where I am now, not where I “should” be.
As spring blooms, I’m reminded that transformation is seasonal by nature. Flowers don’t blossom in January. The sun takes its time. Growth waits for the right conditions—and so should we.
The Spring Reset
If January felt too heavy, too cold (literally or figuratively), or if you were still in recovery from the fast-paced holiday season to get grounded, that’s OK. It’s understandably human. Good news is spring offers a second chance. A gentler opportunity to reset after a bit of a recharge.
This is the season of reset and renewal—not reinvention. It’s about shedding what’s no longer needed, nourishing what’s already taking root, and giving ourselves permission to bloom… slowly and with intention.
Check In, Don’t Beat Yourself Up
If you set goals, intents, or even just had a feeling about how 2025 would go, now is a great time to pause and reflect:
- What’s still speaking to you?
- What’s shifted?
- What’s worth watering?
- What’s worth weeding out?
Remember those wild stats I shared in January? Nearly 1 in 4 people give up their resolutions by the end of week one. If you’re still here—still curious, still trying—that’s a win worth celebrating. Especially considering the uncertainty of the world around us, both domestically and internationally.
Leaders, It’s Q2—Time To Reground and Regroup
Spring isn’t just for personal renewal. It’s a checkpoint for leaders, too. While Q1 often comes with pressure to sprint and perform, Q2 invites a more sustainable approach. This is the moment to check your organization’s pulse and reset with clarity of plans—not just momentum for the sake of movement.
Ask yourself:
- Are the changes we initiated in January still aligned with our values?
- Have we celebrated small wins—or just moved the goalpost?
- What do our people need more of right now: direction, affirmation or even reassurance?
Now is also a great time to “spring clean” your leadership habits. Is there a communication style, a meeting structure, or a bias you’ve outgrown? Clearing space for more consistent, inclusive leadership takes intention. And yes, time but that time is now.
2025 In A Word: Consistency
After sitting with it for a while, my word for the year is consistency. Not perfection. Not productivity. Just the quiet, steady commitment to showing up, even when life is uncertain. Even when I’m tired. Even when it’s easier to start over than to stay the course.
Consistency reminds me that growth doesn’t have to be loud to be real. It just has to be honest.
Try This: Spring Reset Prompt
If you’re looking to reset this spring, take five minutes to check in with yourself:
- What’s one belief, behavior, or habit I’m ready to release?
- What’s one thing I’ve been consistently doing—even in small ways—that deserves to be celebrated?
You don’t have to start over. You just have to keep going. Or in the words of your favorite animated blue tang: just keep swimming.
A Gentle Reminder
“Spring doesn’t rush, yet everything still blooms.”
You’re not late. You’re just blooming on your own timeline.
If you’ve chosen a word for 2025, I’d love to hear it. And if not, I encourage you to take the time to find one. Spring’s the season that reminds us: we’re still becoming and that becoming requires consistency.
