Google Launches AI And Cloud Training For Veterans

An often-overlooked population is set to receive a boost toward inclusion via a new commitment from Google Cloud.

As of August 2023, the unemployment rate for veterans was 2.9 percent, a figure that stands below the national average of 3.8 percent. Yet, while lower unemployment numbers point to a story of opportunity, we as inclusive leaders choose to dig deeper into the unique challenges veterans face. And as inclusive leaders in tech, we have a responsibility to examine how emerging technologies, such as AI and cloud computing, can potentially foster the successful inclusion of veterans in the civilian workforce.

Historically, veterans have enjoyed lower unemployment rates than their non-veteran counterparts. This isn’t just luck — it’s a testament to the programmatic support and vocational policies available to the subgroup. For example, the Department of Veterans Affairs' Vocational Readiness and Employment (VR&E) services have long supported veterans in making the transition to civilian careers, further contributing to their employment stability.

Yet, while many programs aim to improve the integration of veterans into civilian life, it’s important to recognize that not all veterans experience the same outcomes. Gulf War II-era veterans, those who served after September 11, 2001, face higher unemployment rates than veterans from other service periods. In 2022, the unemployment rate for this group stood at 3.1 percent. While lower than that of the general population, it signals that veterans from this era face distinct barriers in need of distinct solutions. From the struggle of translating military skills into civilian roles to coping with mental health challenges like PTSD, post-9/11 veterans often find themselves in a uniquely difficult position.

The Intersection Of Veterans And Inclusion

Additionally, veterans are a deeply diverse group, spanning various races, ethnicities, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Their varied experiences enhance innovation and create environments that are both inclusive and equitable.

But this narrative is shifting. Focused initiatives have been developed to bridge the gap, and the unemployment rate for this group has been on a downward trajectory, signaling a positive trend in integrating veterans into the civilian workforce.

In today’s tech landscape, AI and cloud technology can be game changers for veterans looking to transition into civilian careers. AI-powered platforms are now matching veterans with jobs that align with their military skill sets, often in industries like tech and cybersecurity.

Reskilling and upskilling opportunities are vital. Veterans are increasingly seeking certifications in emerging fields like machine learning and robotics. AI-driven educational platforms can tailor learning experiences, helping veterans acquire the technical skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving job market. Google Cloud’s Veteran-Centered Initiative

One of the most exciting recent developments in the veteran employment space is Google Cloud’s new initiative: Google Cloud Launchpad for Veterans. In a statement shared with CRN, the cloud service provider announced the program offering veterans a no-cost training and certification journey. Designed by veterans for veterans, the program “aims to equip veterans with the cloud computing and AI skills needed to drive innovation and contribute to digital transformation efforts across industries.”

Kicking off with a two-day virtual training event November 7 and 8, hosted by U.S. Marine Corp veteran Patrick Haggerty. This interactive training, followed by an opportunity to take the Cloud Digital Leader exam. But beyond the exam, and perhaps more importantly, this initiative offers a pathway for veterans to establish themselves in one of the most in-demand areas of tech.

By providing this kind of targeted support, Google Cloud is offering veterans an entry into a thriving industry; helping to shift the statistics around veteran employment.
