SMC Router's Scalability Ideal For SOHO
Along with broadband connectivity and wizard-driven setup, the SMCBR14UP offers a four-port 100-Mbps dual-speed switch with automatic MDI-MDIX ports, firewall security and VPN support.
very small business aims to grow, and a new router from SMC Networks is designed to grow right along with them.
Available in April, SMC’s Barricade Cable/DSL Router (SMCBR14UP) gives VARs a way to outfit their small-business customers with a wide range of switching and security tools in an integrated package that starts at $69.99, said Tony Stramandinoli, director of marketing at SMC, Irvine, Calif.
The new router makes a fine fit for small-business environments and even home offices. But the router’s built-in network address translation (NAT) and dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) tools also give it the ability to handle as many as 253 PCs from a single IP address. Integrated USB and parallel ports also go a long way toward ensuring scalability, Stramandinoli said.
“Some of the real scalability comes from the USB and the parallel ports. For example, a USB port can give small businesses the option to even add additional storage drives if needed,” he said.
Such scalability from a low-cost, entry-level router means small businesses can expect to see their investment in the device recouped before they outgrow it, said Tony Tuezada, sales manager at Computer 1 Products of America, an SMC reseller in Signal Hill, Calif. “I can sell this router to small businesses that have been using nothing but dial-up connections or DSL, or I can use it to equip an office of 15 people,” Tuezada said. “Both types of customers are always surprised at the price point, and we give the customer the assurance that what they are getting is scalable and will serve them today and a year down the road.”
