VK Jones

Jones has made the rounds in his career, ranging from serving as an assistant professor at Stanford University to co-founding Clarity Wireless, Belmont, Calif., a maker of wireless networking gear. After Cisco Systems purchased Clarity, Jones directed algorithm development for Cisco’s Wireless Access Business Unit.

When one hears the name Dr. Jones, images of a trailblazing archeologist with the handle ’Indiana’ may come to mind. While VK Jones may not be looking for the Temple of Doom, he is still certainly a trailblazer.

Jones is the chief scientist and executive director of communication system engineering at Airgo Networks, a manufacturer of wireless chipsets used by several wireless access point manufacturers.

In his quest to build a better wireless topology, Jones explored the mathematical concept that multiple antennas working in concert could boost the range of wireless networks. That study led to the birth of multiple-in-multiple-out (MIMO) wireless technology, which overcame limitations inherent in 802.11G wireless networking by extending its useable range and speed. With all of the major manufacturers jumping on the MIMO bandwagon, the market has readily embraced the technology.
