Symbol Technologies MC1000 Mobile Computer
Price: $695

For applications where data entry and batch processing are key requirements, Symbol's MC1000 is a solid choice. And you don't need to be selling to a retailer the size of Wal-Mart. (Then again, it's not for the country store either.) This Windows CE-based device is designed to track inventory accurately, yet it's lightweight and can be used in harsh conditions. The MC1000 is among the first of Symbol's handhelds that fall under the Service From The Start program, a three-year service agreement that promises three-day turnaround on systems sent to Symbol repair centers. The service, which covers all repairs, including those made to displays, keypads, plastics and internal components, includes access to technical documentation on Symbol's Web site and telephone access to engineers. A feature-rich portable at an affordable price, the MC1000 is a valuable addition to the line card of any midmarket VAR.

Gateway E-100M
Price: $1,400
This latest notebook model from Gateway has it all: It's lightweight and compact, yet solid, and it can be used for mainstream applications. And talk about a slim form factor. The E-100M, sold largely by VARs in Gateway's ProNet Partner Program, is less than 1 inch thick, so it's sure to please midmarket road warriors. The 12-inch display is bright; the keyboard isn't cluttered; and the system comes with Intel's Core Solo processor, integrated 802.11 a/b/g Wi-Fi and optional BlueTooth support. In August, look for a Core2 Duo version.

Toshiba Tecra M6
Price: Starts at $1,059
At 4.1 pounds and just shy of 1 inch thick, this is as big as a subnotebook should get. While a little thicker than most ultraportables, Toshiba's M6 does have a built-in DVD-R drive. And it's durable too. The M6 comes with Toshiba's hard-drive protection system, so the drive is protected in its own casing and designed to shut down on impact, or if there's sudden vibration. Toshiba refers to this portable as the ideal mobile-computing companion, and that's good news for laptop-toting end users and the solution providers that serve them.

Wyse Technology Wyse S10
Price: $300
While thin clients still account for only a fraction of the desktop market, their appeal is on the rise. The Wyse S10, a bare-bones unit without any storage capacity, was designed for the Citrix Access Suite and is based on Wyse's latest thin-client operating system, version 5.0. High performance, coupled with low total cost of ownership, makes this an ideal choice for midtier companies. The latest OS bundled with the client supports multiple sessions and client imaging that requires only a standard FTP server.

HP Compaq nx6325
Price: Starts at $1,049
When Hewlett-Packard updated its notebook portfolio this summer, it added a broad array of options. Most notable is the fact that HP was the first to launch a notebook with AMD's dual-core 64 X2 processor. The nx6325 is ideal for users that want support for 64-bit apps and like to run lots of programs at once, but it's also available with AMD's value-oriented Sempron CPU. HP offers the notebook with a docking station that functions as network-attached storage. Mobile workers will find the nx6325 attractive, especially as more 64-bit multimedia apps go to market.
