Solution providers continue to report that custom systems are their most profitable desktops. Custom systems also are the most profitable in the PC server category, but not in the notebook category.

Building Activity Continues Upward Trend

Of those solution providers that sell custom systems, the percentage exclusively building their own or both building and buying took a decided jump quarter-to-quarter, which is usually a sign of a strong market. The trend was most evident in servers, but even in the notebook category, while the percentage exclusively building their own whitebooks held steady, the percentage both building and buying whitebooks nudged upward.

Custom desktops, for the first time, in two years regained their place as the market leader in the channel, with 34 percent of solution providers citing white boxes as their best-selling brand, up from 22 percent a year ago. Only Apple grew faster than the custom systems, while HP and Dell lost ground.
