Gigabit Switches Prepare The Way

Each switch also ships with dual mini-Gigabit interface converter fiber expansion ports, which enable attachment to high-speed network pathways such as Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet. In addition, each switch includes 64 VLAN support, wireless 802.1x support, port mirroring and Telnet support. The 16-port switch is priced from $479.99, and the 24-port model starts at $599.99.

new set of switches from Linksys is giving small businesses two new ways to prepare their networks for next-generation applications such as VoIP.

The Linksys SRW2016 and SRW2024 Gigabit switches, unveiled last month, come with 16 ports and 24 ports respectively and feature the vendor’s WebView remote monitoring technology. WebView enables users to remotely monitor and configure the switches by way of a browser-based management console.

The switches also pave the way for small businesses to begin adding high-bandwidth applications, said Allen Powell, director of channels sales at Linksys, a subsidiary of Cisco Systems, San Jose, Calif.

“Small businesses that are looking to install Gigabit gear are looking forward,” Powell said. “And resellers who move their small-business customers into Gigabit are preparing their customers for the next round of applications, like voice and video and a lot more.”

Seth Balsam, president of Network Implementation Solutions, a Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based VAR catering to small businesses, has already sold 10 of the new Linksys switches. Balsam said his small-business clients understand when he explains the importance of building out their networks with future high-speed applications in mind.

“Small-business customers see that it is not that expensive to buy Gigabit right now, and in doing so they are planning for the future,”Balsam said.
