Microsoft Releases Vista SP2 Beta To Testers

Microsoft isn't encouraging the masses to download the Vista SP2 beta, but will offer it to anyone who wants to take it for a test drive as part of Customer Preview Program (CPP), said Mike Nash, corporate vice president of Windows Product Management, in a Tuesday blog post.

The Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 SP2 beta are included in a single package, and Microsoft plans to release the final Vista SP2 code sometime in the first half of next year, according to Nash.

While Vista SP1 was a comprehensive update that addressed many of the performance- and device-driver compatibility issues that early Vista users faced, Vista SP2 is aimed more at fine-tuning performance.

In addition to rolling up all of the fixes that Microsoft has released since Vista SP1's launch in February, Vista SP2 will include the RTM version of the Hyper-V hypervisor, Windows Search 4.0, support for Bluetooth 2.1, simplified Wi-Fi configuration and better power consumption.
