AMD Announces Next-Gen Chips

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company, however, stopped short of revealing many details about the Sempron processor family. In a statement, AMD said the chips would "redefine everyday computing for today's value-conscious buyers of desktop and notebook PCs."

AMD also said that its Athlon 64 processors would remain on the market. But the company made no such statement regarding its 32-bit processor lineup.

Earlier this year, AMD rival Intel said that it was ditching plans to deliver its next single-core processors. Instead, the Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip giant said it would hasten its schedule to deliver dual-core processors to the market.

Plans call for Intel to begin shipping some dual-core chips by next year. To date, AMD hasn't specified its dual-core or multicore processor plans.
