Apple Donates $1 Million To Rescue Workers & Families
Apple Computer plans to donate $1 million to the families of the firefighters, police officers and other emergency personnel who lost their lives in last week's terrorist attacks.
The donation will be made through the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, said spokeswoman Lynn Fox. For this holiday season, Apple also plans to donate an iBook notebook computer to each of those families with children, she added.
No Apple employees were at the sites of the New York and Washington attacks, Fox said.
In the wake of the attacks, the Cupertino-based company earlier Monday canceled its Apple Expo 2001 show in Paris, which was scheduled to be held Sept. 26-30 and feature an opening keynote speech from Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
At Seybold San Francisco on Sept. 25, Jobs is scheduled to deliver an introduction via satellite for a presentation by Phil Schiller, Apple's vice president of worldwide product marketing. Gene Gable, president of Seybold Seminars, Monday said that the digital publishing and media conference, to be held Sept. 24-28, will proceed as planned.
This month, Apple is slated to ship Mac OS X version 10.1, the first major upgrade to its new Unix-based operating system. Despite the terrorist attacks, that plan--announced at Macworld New York in July--remains on track, said Apple product spokeswoman Natalie Sequeria. Information on a 10.1 release date is expected later this week, she said.
