Microsoft Ships Windows XP Embedded Service Pack 1
The service pack incorporates Windows XP SP1, including the .Net Framework and changes to the user interface as required by the company's antitrust settlement with the government.
The SP1, announced at the Windows Embedded Developer's Conference (DevCon) here, also offers new features optimized for embedded development including remote boot, device update agent, system deployment image manager, footprint estimator, and new protocols and services that include IPv6 and USB 2.0, Microsoft said.
Also at DevCon, Microsoft and microprocessor partner Transmeta announced that the Transmeta Crusoe processor is the first microprocessor to be certified by Microsoft for the new Windows XP Embedded SP1.
The Crusoe microprocessor combined with Windows XP Embedded SP1 will enable rapid development of connected products such as thin clients, kiosks, ATMs, gaming platforms, residential gateways, advanced set-top boxes and network, industrial automation and point-of-sale devices, the companies said.
Transmeta's Crusoe is already certified for Microsoft's Windows CE.Net operating system for handheld devices.
The two companies have also collaborated on the Windows XP Tablet PC operating system, and Crusoe will be incorporated as part of the Tablet PCs due later this year and in 2003.
Transmeta employs Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux kernel.
