CES 2007: Motorola CEO Zander Predicts Mobile Explosion

2007 Consumer Electronics Show

"This is a world where everyone is getting connected," Zander said, citing statistics showing that more mobile devices are sold per second than there are human births: 25 mobile devices sold vs. four births per second worldwide.

"Over the next 10 years, there's going to be an explosion [of mobile technology]," Zander said. One billion mobile devices are expected to be sold over the next two years as the population in countries like India and China get connected, he noted.

By building on its recent acquisition of Good Technology, Motorola is enabling functionality on devices such as its Q smartphone that will tie mobile enterprise users to their applications, back-end systems, e-mail and video content, according to Zander. "With my Q, I use my laptop 30 percent to 40 percent less," he said.

Also at CES, Motorola unveiled a slew of new devices and technology partnerships aimed at spurring sales of mobile technology for home users. For example, Motorola is one of several device manufacturers teaming up with Yahoo to deliver Yahoo Go for Mobile 2.0, a new application that launched in beta at the show.

"For the first time, the Internet now fits on your mobile phone," said Marco Boerrles, senior vice president of connected life at Yahoo. "For the last 10 years, the industry has tried to squish the PC Internet onto mobile devices. Yahoo Go is truly the Internet that fits in your pocket."

The new service brings mobile phone users search capabilities, local maps, city guides, e-mail access, photo sharing and other customizable content, Boerrles said. The beta version is available now for download on Motorola's new MOTORAZR maxx V6 and V3xx devices and will be preloaded on Motorola devices in the first half of this year.

Besides several new mobile devices, Motorola launched the new DCH Series set-top boxes at CES. The device enables customers to come into a TV program after it has already begun and "rewind" it to the beginning. The product line also includes Motorola's Follow Me TV feature, which lets users move content between different wired and mobile devices throughout the home.
