Tech Data And Microsoft Ink Exclusive Mobile Accessories Distribution Deal
Tech Data and Microsoft will be teaming up in an exclusive distribution agreement where the Clearwater, Fla.-based distributor will offer select mobile device accessories to national retailers and solution providers across the country.
These include portable power solutions, wireless charging solutions, audio solutions, connected gadgets, mobile accessories and mobile essentials, such as Bluetooth headsets, chargers and batteries. The Microsoft agreement runs through Tech Data's Mobile Solutions division.
"We’ll be the exclusive distributor for the Microsoft Mobility accessories in the U.S., with plans to really drive that into Canada as well as Latin America, but we're starting off in the U.S.," said Patrick Stokes, vice president of Tech Data Mobile Solutions. "We’re really excited about it. With the introduction of more Windows 8 devices in the U.S., it's a natural, logical fit to have the mobile accessories go with them. It's a seamless, logical addition to our mobility portfolio."

Stokes called the deal a key linchpin for his company as it helps establish Tech Data Mobile Solutions' presence in the U.S. and extends its reach to a new customer base.
Many of Microsoft’s mobile accessories are universally compatible and are not exclusive to Windows Phone, meaning they work seamlessly with iOS and Android devices in addition to PCs. Tech Data partners said the deal is a sign of Microsoft's acknowledging the benefit of the channel.
"The Tech Data announcement reflects a good indication that Microsoft sees value in the channel to support its Surface products and ongoing strategy," said Robert Braceland, vice president of sales for Entre Computer Center, a West Springfield, Mass.-based Tech Data partner. "I am sure this is a result of Microsoft’s users requesting a more friendly and convenient way to source the corresponding accessories.
"We have had many requests for these accessories and, in many cases, customers are willing to pay more for the ease of transaction. At some point, Microsoft will recognize the same for their Surface Tablets and look to Tech Data's channel partners to enhance the Microsoft experience with exceptional service. Entre Computer ... has and will continue to prove our ability to deliver effective pre-sales, ongoing support, and deliver high-touch services to support our clients."
Michael Goldstein, president and CEO of LANInfotech, a Microsoft partner based in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., praised the deal as an opportunity for solution providers to become a "one-stop shop."
"This gives us another thing to add on to products," said Goldstein. "Traditionally for me, my customers might not come to me for these accessory-type of products. But now we can be the one-stop shop for easier add-on sales."
