AWS Taps Matt Garman For Top Sales And Marketing Role
Garman, who now will report to AWS CEO Andy Jassy, previously was vice president of AWS Compute Services since 2013, overseeing AWS’ team for its core Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).
Amazon Web Services has a new executive leading the public cloud provider’s sales and marketing.
Matt Garman has been promoted to head up AWS’ demand generation team that includes sales and marketing, a role that was vacant for several years with duties akin to a chief operating officer.
Garman, who now will report to AWS CEO Andy Jassy, previously was vice president of AWS Compute Services since 2013, overseeing AWS’ team for its core Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).
His new role comes after his December appointment to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ elite 22-member “S-Team,” comprised of the company’s most senior leaders that advise on its direction. Garman started at AWS as a business school intern in 2006, the year of AWS’ launch. His new position had been vacant since Adam Selipsky, now CEO of Tableau Software, held the role before he left AWS in 2016.
Bloomberg first reported the news on Monday.
David Brown, vice president of Amazon EC2, will take on Garman’s former role. Brown joined in 2007 and was part of the original team in South Africa that built and developed EC2.
An AWS spokesman confirmed the executive changes and several others, which were relayed to employees via email on Friday.
Rachel Thornton, previously AWS’ vice president of global field and partner marketing for just shy of five years, is replacing Ariel Kelman as AWS’ vice president of worldwide marketing. Thornton is credited with playing a key role in the global expansion of the field marketing function and, as a former six-year Salesforce employee, being one of the critical executives that developed its annual Dreamforce conference into a powerhouse event.
Kelman is moving over to rival Oracle, which confirmed he’s been named chief marketing officer, replacing Rupal Shah Hollenbeck, who left in January after about a year in the position, according to her LinkedIn profile.
Bezos’ S-Team now has four representatives from AWS. In addition to Garman, Peter DeSantis, an AWS engineer who’s vice president of global infrastructure, was named to the S-Team last spring, joining Jassy and Charlie Bell, senior vice president in charge of AWS engineering, operations and products.
AWS accounted for nearly $9 billion of Amazon’s $70 billion in total net sales for the third quarter that ended Sept. 30, 2019, but a lopsided $2.26 billion – or almost 72 percent -- of Amazon’s $3.15 billion in total operating income.
