Nokia Realigns, Targets Software Download Space

Part of the Nokia changes involve a greater push to sell software downloads, akin to Apple's successful iPhone app store. Therefore, all mobile games are now available through Nokia's Ovi Store, in addition to through existing channels.

In a statement, Niklas Savander, Nokia's executive vice president of services, said the cell phone giant is aiming to increase opportunities for third-party developers and other partners to create services, and accelerating the development of a common platform for Nokia's different service offerings. Nokia wants to add a variety of third-party partners, such as other image and social networking sites, to the image capture and sharing features on its devices.

Nokia is betting that the changes will also help it to become more efficient, streamlining operations in many of its services entities and realizing cost efficiencies in a number of areas. To that end, the manufacturer said it will refocus its internal IT and compatibility and industry collaboration activities in the Corporate Development Office unit.

The realignments are part of Nokia's plans, unveiled earlier this year, to adjust its business operations and cost base in accordance with market demand and to safeguard future competitiveness.
