LG: We Have Windows Mobile Smartphones Coming Too

Sony Ericsson already has its seat with the Xperia X2, expected to hit the streets sometime in the fourth quarter. And the HTC Touch 2 (aka the HTC Mega) is on the way with Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 baked in.

Now, LG Electronics revealed that it too has some Windows Mobile 6.5 smartphones in the works.

There are sure more to follow, as the hype around Windows Mobile 6.5 reaches a near breaking point. Earlier this week, Microsoft confirmed that a host of devices running its latest mobile operating system version will be available in October, just in time for the bustling holiday smartphone shopping season.

LG revealed its Windows Mobile 6.5 plans on Thursday. The world's third-largest mobile phone maker told Reuters it will launch three new smartphones within the next few weeks, all running Windows Mobile 6.5.

So far, there have been few details on the three new Windows Mobile smartphones. LG has only publicly discussed one new model, the GW 550. The GW 550 is expected to resemble the Nokia E71 and the Samsung Omnia Pro 7320, according to a report from TechTree.com. The GW 550 comes with a landscape QVGA display, full QWERTY keyboard, HSDPA support and a 3-megapixel camera.

The remaining two LG Windows Mobile 6.5 devices are expected to be a touch screen and a touch screen with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. All three LG devices are expected to be equipped with LG's proprietary S Class interface, TechTree.com noted.

The Windows Mobile devices from LG come on the heels of a February deal between LG and Microsoft under which Windows Mobile will be the South Korean company's main smartphone platform. Including the three upcoming devices, LG told Reuters it plans to launch a total of 13 new Windows Mobile phones by the end of 2010.
