Amazon Offers Free Kindle App For RIM Blackberry Owners
The new Kindle application for the BlackBerry supports BlackBerry devices on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and other U.S. carriers.
Amazon said it was responding to demand from BlackBerry owners. "Since the launch of our popular Kindle for iPhone app last year, customers have been asking us to bring a similar experience to the BlackBerry," said Ian Freed, Amazon Kindle vice president, in a statement.
Amazon already supports Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch, as well as Windows PCs, with a Kindle application. Support for Apple's Mac desktop computers and the recently announced iPad tablet are in the works, the company said.
Amazon sells six ebooks for the Kindle for every 10 physical books with the same title, the company disclosed last month during its fourth-quarter earnings call. Making the Kindle application available on a wider array of devices is sure to increase those ebook sales.
Amazon said its Whispersync wireless technology allows users to save and synchronize bookmarks across multiple devices. Customers who purchase ebooks on one device can access the same ebooks through Amazon using other devices.
