Samsung Galaxy Tab Looks To Bring Apple iPad Back To Earth
Samsung wants to get its toes into the touch-screen tablet pool, too.
Reports have surfaced in Korean newspapers indicating that the electronics giant is prepping a tablet based on its line of Galaxy smartphones in hopes of eating into some of the available tablet market share not already gobbled up by the Apple iPad and the host of other rivals that have started to trickle into the market.
Dubbed the Galaxy Tab, Samsung's iPad answer is expected to hit shelves come September.
Reports indicate that Korea-based Samsung is planning an Aug. 11 event during which it may share more details of the now mythical device. Early indicators are that Samsungs Galaxy Tab will take design cues and elements from its latest Samsung Galaxy S smartphone.
While early details are scarce, the International Business Times is reporting that the Galaxy Tab is expected to pack a seven-inch touch screen, run Google Android 2.2 as its operating system and feature a Super AMOLED display. The Samsung Galaxy Tab will come with 16 GB of storage, but can expand to double that capacity with a memory card. The Galaxy Tab is also expected to have an A8 processor and support both Wi-Fi and 3G networks. It may also feature a 3.2 megapixel camera, a feature the Apple iPad lacks.
Samsung's pending entrance into the tablet tussle comes as device makers look to compete with Apple's iPad, which has become the tablet to beat and has sold more than 3 million Apple iPad units since it hit stores in April. In the iPad's wake, others have made tablets a top priority for their 2010 device lineups.
Dell is working on its own compact touch-screen tablet with the Dell Streak. Meanwhile, HP has made it clear that tablets are a big part of its client device strategy, with word that a Palm-based tablet dubbed the HP PalmPad is in the works. Meanwhile, Microsoft has said that tablets are a top priority and others like Toshiba and Asus have hinted that touch-screen tablets are in their very near futures.
