HP Expands Its Notebook Battery Recall Due To Overheating Risk

HP Inc. this week said it's expanding a recall of notebook computer batteries, which the company and federal authorities say have a potential for "fire and burn hazards."

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission disclosed that the recall has been expanded to cover 101,000 batteries, up from 41,000 batteries that were recalled in June, 2016.

HP has received a total of eight reports of batteries that overheated, melted or charred -- though there has been only one new report since the initial recall, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. About $5,000 in total property damage has been reported as a result of the incidents.

The recall covers batteries that were sold between March, 2013 and October, 2016, and that are compatible with HP, Compaq, HP ProBook, HP ENVY, Compaq Presario and HP Pavilion notebooks. HP said that the recall does not cover all notebooks sold in those lines, however.

HP said that customers affected by the recall will be able to receive a replacement battery at no charge.
