GeoCities: We Always Remember Our First
Yahoo is finally pulling the plug on GeoCities -- what were you thinking about?
GeoCities was my first real exposure to Web sites and interaction beyond logging in through CompuServe and wondering what to do next. Yahoo sounded the death knell for GeoCities back in April, but that doesn't make today any easier to handle.
Sure, you could count on broken buttons, garish backgrounds, pictures that never showed up and poorly placed tickers with often times nonsensical messages. Still, there is a soft spot in my heart for the little Webpage service that could.
These days Webpages are dynamic, well thought out and are limited in design only by the creator of the site -- how boring is that? I mean, does a drop down menu that appears when a mouse is scrolled over it really beat twinkling stars on a black background?
I don't think so. But I might just bit a little sad that today has finally arrived.
The Web comic xkcd has a nice tribute to the now gone GeoCities lay out, in case you want to take a stroll down memory lane.
