Alliance Among Qualcomm, Microsoft, Others Looks To Broaden IoT Landscape

Qualcomm, among more than 120 other companies, has developed technologies for AllJoyn. AllJoyn is a product of the AllSeen Alliance, in which several companies are partnering to expand large-scale applications for the Internet of Things.

’It’s an open-source effort to enable different devices within the smart home or some smart environment -- industrial or commercial setting as well -- to allow devices in an environment like that to interoperate with each other,’ said Dragan Petrovic, product manager at Qualcomm.

LG, Microsoft, Symantec and Sony are all members of the alliance.

’The idea is to allow devices from different manufacturers, different devices to be interoperable,’ said Petrovic. ’So they can collaborate and do something useful for the users.’

Samsung’s Dr. Alan Messer recently pointed out the lack of bridged technologies among different manufacturers in the Internet of Things is a major hurdle for widespread integration of the technology. AllJoyn works across various platforms, including Android, iOS and Linux.

According to the AllSeen Alliance website, membership in the group is ’open to anyone interested in collaborating and contributing to the AllJoyn open-source project. It incorporates more than 20 of the most important open technical standards in its work.’

’The code used by the AllSeen Alliance has been open source from the beginning,’ according to the website. ’When everyone jointly develops and uses the same freely available code, companies can develop innovative services on top of it and get to market faster.’
