EDS Upgrades State Medicaid System
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has awarded a seven-year, $48 million contract to EDS for the design, development, implementation and maintenance of a new Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS), which will be built leveraging EDS' interChange Medicaid system. EDS is charged with replacing the Commonwealth's current state-operated Medicaid system with a new J2EE Web-based application using the shared infrastructure already in place.
To be called the NewMMIS, the system will support the consolidation of health records, the implementation of new program controls and the ability to create new programs. The NewMMIS will be the core technology platform for the Commonwealth's Medicaid program, as well as a number of other human-services programs and will include shared services, such as enterprise identity management and electronic payments.
The NewMMIS system is consistent with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) Medicaid Information Technology Architecture (MITA) framework. The Massachusetts Medicaid program, MassHealth, provides health-care benefits to almost 1 million citizens through approximately 27,000 providers.
