VMworld: SafeNet Enters Virtual Security Market

The product provides encryption of virtual machines (VMs), pre-launch authentication, central auditing and FIPS certified key management, according to the company, which also says that ProtectV is compatible with vCenter and vShield, as well as Amazon Web Services Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and Elastic Block Store (EBS) environments.

The system enables you to encrypt all virtual machine instances, snapshots, backups and storage volumes across various locations and disaster recovery sites.

"One of the key attributes is the ability to control not only the data itself but also the management of rights around the copying of VMs," explained Ron Stamboly, security architect at SafeNet. "Plus, the customer has full control over the keys, a piece of virtualized software that is hugely important to maintaining security over time."

ProtectV is integrated with the company's enterprise key management solution, known as "KeySecure," which enables central management of cryptographic keys across a wide variety of encryption platforms.

"One of the most important aspects is the ability to leverage code location environments, yet still be able to manage and secure the data as though it were locked in your own data center," added Stamboly. "ProtectV allows you to isolate sensitive data and protect it, at any point in the lifecycle."

Another major feature involves the delivery of audit logs, which are instrumental in validating specific functions around compliance and data governance. The company promises a trustworthy audit trail, regardless of where the data is located, in order to ensure compliance with key regulations, including PCI DSS, HIPAA and HITECH.

ProtectV, as well as the full range of security products offered by SafeNet, are on display this week at the company's booth at VMworld in San Francisco.
