Synopsys Buying SaaS Security Company WhiteHat For $330 Million
“WhiteHat Security’s DAST capabilities complement our strengths in static analysis, interactive analysis and software composition analysis, while their expertise in SaaS will accelerate our security testing SaaS capabilities,” said Synopsys’ Jason Schmitt.
Synopsys is boosting its application security capabilities with the acquisition of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) security standout WhiteHat Security for $330 million.
Synopsys, a Mountain View, Calif.-based semiconductor, automation, and security testing specialist, is looking to leverage WhiteHat’s SaaS delivery of dynamic application security testing (DAST) technology into its security technology portfolio, according to Jason Schmitt, general manager of the Synopsys Software Integrity Group.
“WhiteHat Security’s DAST capabilities complement our strengths in static analysis, interactive analysis and software composition analysis, while their expertise in SaaS will accelerate our security testing SaaS capabilities,” said Schmitt in a statement. “We are excited about the value this will create for our customers and welcome the WhiteHat Security team as they join us in our mission to build trust in the software that businesses depend on.”

In 2020, Synopsys acquired a similar application security company in Tinfoil Security to better integrate dynamic application security testing into development and DevOps workflows.
Then in 2021, Synopsys purchased Code Dx, an artificial intelligence performance optimization specialist. Code Dx boosted Synopsys’ silicon lifecycle management portfolio with real-time, in-field optimization software technologies.
Synopsys, who’s vice president of global channels, Tom Herrmann, was named a 2022 Channel Chief, said WhiteHat Security will provide it with significant SaaS capabilities and market leading (DAST) technology to strengthen its broad application security testing portfolio. The two companies say they share a vision for delivering SaaS-based security testing solutions and building security into the software development lifecycle.
“The combination of our respective strengths and our shared vision for the future of application security presents exciting opportunities for our customers and the broader market,” said WhiteHat CEO Craig Hinkley in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to serve the loyal customers that have trusted WhiteHat Security for nearly 20 years and expanding our footprint as part of the larger Synopsys portfolio.”
WhiteHat Security is owned by NTT Security Corp., which acquired it in 2019. Synopsys is expected to complete its purchase of WhiteHat from NTT during its third fiscal quarter.
Synopsys has a long history in the electronic design automation (EDA) and semiconductor industry with a broad portfolio of application security testing tools and services.
The company touts its portfolio of software security products and services as the most comprehensive in the world and interoperates with third-party and open source tools to allow customers to leverage existing technology investments to build the best security program possible.
