SAP Partner Lemongrass Launches Services To Assist With Business Technology Platform Migrations

As SAP customers look to move off legacy applications, move to the cloud and adopt AI, Lemongrass is seeing growing demand for advisory and support services for business and organizations implementing BTP as a critical step.

SAP service partner Lemongrass has launched a suite of new services designed to support businesses and organizations implementing the SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), the core technology platform that underlies SAP’s operational applications.

The new offerings include advisory services around BTP and Rise with SAP, assessments of customers’ installed ERP applications and customizations, and migration services for moving off older SAP platforms including SAP NetWeaver and legacy products such as SAP Business Warehouse, SAP Process Integration and SAP Process Orchestration.

The new services package comes as SAP continues to encourage its customers to move to the cloud editions of its software and as the 2027 deadline approaches for the end of mainstream support for Business Suite 7 and Enterprise Central Component (ECC) 6.

“There's no single path to BTP adoption,” said Eamonn O’Neill, Lemongrass co-founder and CTO (pictured), in an interview with CRN. “There tends to be a number of entry points, but we do see that with a bit of experience, customers are starting to realize that [BTP] is quite a joined-up platform and it allows them to access all of their SAP capabilities and their knowledge across all of those layers.”

“We have customers asking us to help them with this journey and we realized this is a long-term benefit for customers, something we want to invest in as well,” O’Neill said.

SAP Business Technology Platform is a cloud-based platform that provides a unified suite of services that support the company’s ERP, CRM, supply chain, and human capital management operational applications.

BTP provides the underlying services that automate business workflows and connect and integrate SAP applications. BTP also includes development tools needed to build application extensions and add-ons, and it manages the data used by the applications and provides data analysis capabilities. More recently, BTP is where SAP has been building artificial intelligence functionality that works with the operational applications.

While more recent SAP customers have BTP implemented has part of their SAP deployments (provided as part of their SAP licenses), O’Neill said most SAP users, those with older editions of SAP applications, do not have BTP.

BTP Migration Drivers

Many SAP customers are looking to upgrade their SAP systems – including implementing BTP – for a number of reasons, according to O’Neill. The looming deadline for end-of-maintenance support for Business Suite 7 and ECC 6 (the core ERP functionality within Business Suite 7) is a primary driver.

Others are upgrading to newer editions of SAP applications, including the S/4HANA Cloud applications, as part of broader cloud migration and digital transformation initiatives.

SAP has been aggressively encouraging customers to upgrade to its cloud software through its Rise with SAP package of services, templates and technologies. SAP is also adding new capabilities to its cloud software – including AI functionality – before adding them to its on-premises applications.

Earlier this week SAP, in announcing its 2025 first quarter financial results, said cloud ERP Suite revenue was €4.25 billion (about U.S.$4.83 billion), up 34 percent from one year earlier.

SAP is also promoting the concept of a “clean core” of standard application functionality within S/4HANA, with custom modifications and extensions running within BTP, as a way of simplifying application upgrades, reducing complexity and improving system stability.

“What clean core means is effectively decoupling all of the customizations – all of the custom code that customers have written over the years, which today resides inside the ERP system – they want to decouple that away from the ERP system and put it onto BTP,” O’Neill said. “Clean core is about moving customization out of your ERP and put it onto BTP. And the reason that's important is, it creates a loosely coupled architecture. And the reason that's important is that SAP then can give [customers] innovations that [they] can apply much more quickly.”

O’Neill said AI is a driver here as well. “As more and more boards ask their CIOs to deliver on the promise of AI, they're starting to look around [at their SAP environments] and say, ‘How do we apply it here?’ And there's really only one way SAP can really, safely deliver that to customers and that's through a clean core agenda. And clean core requires BTP. So we tend to see [BTP] as part of the SAP change agenda,” he said.

Lemongrass’s new BTP services include:

  • Advisory services for optimizing an SAP transformation with BTP and SAP Rise.
  • Clean core assessments of ERP systems to identify unnecessary customizations and minimize technical debt.
  • AI-driven clean core assessments using the Lemongrass GenAI platform to document custom code and identify unnecessary modifications.
  • A BTP Starter Pack fast-track solution to kickstart BTP implementation projects.
  • An SAP AI Starter Pack of onsite workshops for working with SAP AI and SAP Joule AI agents.
  • Tools and services for migrating from the legacy SAP Process Integration and SAP Process Orchestration systems to the newer SAP Integration Suite.
  • Tools and services for moving from the legacy Business Warehouse to BTP.

O‘Neill said the Lemongrass BTP services business is “growing really quickly” and could be the biggest part of the company’s business within a year or so.

“Our new services for SAP BTP implementation are designed to empower businesses to embrace the future of Enterprise technology,” said Lemongrass CEO Tim Wintrip, in a statement. “We understand that each organization’s needs are unique, and we are excited to offer a full range of tailored solutions that guide our customers through the entire BTP innovation journey—from planning to migration and ongoing optimization.”
