HP Gives More Scalability, Heterogeneous Support To OpenView SAM

OpenView Storage Area Manager 3.0 (SAM) includes the same core modules as the current version of the application, including Storage Node Manager to map and monitor SANs, Performance Manager to monitor SAN performance, Storage Builder for resource management and SAN planning, and Storage Accounting for chargebacks, said Mark Sorenson, vice president of HP's Storage Software Division.

Version 3.0 offers the ability to manage more heterogeneous SANs than in the past, including support for managing Hitachi Data Systems, EMC Symmetrix and IBM Shark arrays, Sorenson said. By the end of the year, management of EMC Clariion arrays will be added, he said.

This multivendor capability comes from the recent API exchanges HP signed with HDS, EMC, and IBM, Sorenson said. "We were very quick in turning around our recent deals," he said.

OpenView SAM 3.0 also allows increased scalability compared to earlier versions, including the ability to manage SANs in up to 50 locations with up to 500 hosts and up to 50,000 LUNs (logical unit numbers), Sorenson said.

The application is also more tightly integrated with HP's OpenView network framework application, Sorenson said. As a result, OpenView now has increased ability to monitor storage networks and create logical connections between storage and network systems.

HP on Wednesday also enhanced its enterprise tape libraries to support LOT Ultrium 230, SDLT 160/320, and SDLT 110/220 tape drives. A one-drive, eight-cartridge tape autoloader was introduced with supports either an Ultrium 230 or a VS80 tape drive. Also new is NetWare and Linux support for its MSA 1000 disk array.

The complete new version of OpenView SAM 3.0 is scheduled to be available in November, Sorenson said. However, various parts of the application will be available for download over the next couple months, he said.
