Telseon Allows SSPs To Serve Multiple Clients With Single Bandwidth

By using the new point-to-multipoint offering from Telseon, based here, SSPs can pay a single charge for a given bandwidth, and then apportion that bandwidth out to multiple clients depending on their backup and restore requirements, said Jay Gill, director of product management at the company.

Backups and restores are the main application for which clients use SSPs, and clients typically do an incremental backup at night and a full backup on the weekend, Gill said. With traditional bandwidth providers, SSPs or their clients have to pay for enough bandwidth to handle the backups and restores, but that bandwidth may not be used at other times.

"With our service, we offer bandwidth for a single charge but allow the SSP to connect it to multiple client sites," Gill said. "The SSP can then schedule clients' backups in sequence, or run a few simultaneously."

The high-speed Ethernet connection terminates at one of about 120 hosted data centers that currently have contracts with Telseon, Gill said. Once the SSP connects the bandwidth to the appropriate storage infrastructure in the center, it can then be split among multiple customers using that infrastructure, he said.

The cost of a given amount of bandwidth to the SSP itself is the same whether it is dedicated to a single client or used for multiple clients, Gill said. However, it is necessary to provide each client a 20-port Ethernet switch configured specifically for Telseon with filtering to prevent multiple customers from seeing each others' data or interfering with each others' data transfer, he said.
