Sony Leads Optical Drive Pack

What makes the Double Layer and Dual Layer recordable DVD formats unique is that both allow two layers of data to be sandwiched atop each other on each side of a disc, allowing for a total capacity of 8.5 Gbytes per side. Double Layer, or DVD+R Double Layer, was devised by the DVD+RW Alliance. The DVD Forum defined the second format, dubbed Dual Layer, or DVD-R Dual Layer. Both specifications are currently available only in write-once formats.

Sony&s DRU-810A supports DVD-R Dual Layer recording at 4X speeds and DVD+R Double Layer recording at 8X, and it can also record on write-once DVD+R and DVD-R media at 16X. In addition, the drive can record on DVD+RW discs at 8X, on DVD-RW media at 6X, on CD-R discs at 48X and on CD-RWs at 32X.

The internal ATAPI drive can easily be installed in place of an existing CD-ROM drive or it can be used along with a read-only drive to speed up disc copying.

The drive must be installed in a system using an 800MHz Pentium III or faster processor with at least 128 Mbytes of memory and 10 Gbytes of hard drive space. Windows 2000 or Windows XP is required as the operating system.
