Aten KN9116 Lets Administrators Take Control

A staple in any network infrastructure is the KVM switch. The device is used to connect and/or control multiple PCs using a single keyboard, mouse and display. Aten Technology's recently released KN9116 16-port network-based KVM is a great choice for midsize businesses.

This particular KVM targets the midsize to small enterprise market and enables network administrators to remotely access PCs from anywhere in the world, as long as a network connection is available. The device only requires a Java-based browser without the need to preinstall any additional Aten software.

The 1U KVM is rack-mountable and allows administrators to control up to 128 computers using cascading. The enterprise-class device offers a ton of features such as support for graphics on-screen display (OSD) support. The device is also capable of visually supporting 16 monitoring sessions at the same time, and works with just about any OS due to its Java-based client software.

The security, authentication and encryption options that shipped with the device really impressed CRN Test Center engineers. For example, the KVM provides a two-level password login for administrators, 128-bit encryption and automatic logout for idle sessions. Aten's Star VAR channel program separates partners into levels based on the value-adds and services they provide to their customers. Partner levels vary based on whether partners offer services such as pre- and post-sales support and demand generation, and the amount of resources committed to KVM sales is also taken into account.

Partners have access to MDF for certification, education, training, marketing and sales activities, as well as access to Aten's dedicated local account representatives, post-sales support and a dedicated partner Web site. Authorization requirements include annual purchase commitments, industry and vertical market expertise and training. Training is available in person and over the Web. One of the better elements of the channel program is the company's generous $5,000 MDF sign-up bonus and 5 percent co-op.

Aten says the average reseller margins are 30 percent to 40 percent and are based on products sold, market and sales volume. The KVM costs $2,499.99 and is protected by a three- year warranty.
