No More Distance Between KVM Switch, PC

The major problem with traditional KVM switches is that they need special connection cables that are only available in limited lengths. Therefore, traditional KVMs are used mainly in data centers where multiple systems are installed in one room.

Some KVM manufacturers such as Raritan and StarTech have developed new hardware technology to overcome these limitations. Some of these newer KVMs work over Ethernet connections, eliminating cabling problems and making distance between the switch and a controlled PC irrelevant. A different type of KVM device, called a serial console server, manages IT equipment using serial RS-232 management ports. Another innovation squeezes KVM functionality onto a PCI card.

Raritan Dominion KX
Raritan's Dominion KX232 is a KVM-over-IP switch that provides BIOS-level control of up to 32 servers from a single keyboard, monitor and mouse. Its remote-access capabilities allow servers to be controlled from anywhere in the world through a Web browser using standard Ethernet CAT5 cabling. Security features include 128-bit encryption, remote power control, dual Ethernet connections and support for LDAP, RADIUS, Active Directory, SNMP and syslog integration. All data, including video, is protected by 128-bit encryption. The switch allows for realtime auditing and accounting, and rules-based permissions document all user activity and help prevent unauthorized access. The Dominion KX232 has 32 KVM ports and costs $4,995.

The Dominion KVM uses computer interface modules (CIMs) that connect the KVM switch to the keyboard, video and mouse ports of individual servers using special dongle connectors. The CIMs emulate keyboard and mouse signals to ensure that the connected servers respond to commands quickly, and CIMs also convert video signals for transmission over CAT5 cabling. Servers can be located as far as 50 feet from the Dominion KX232 when connected by a cable. Longer distances require connections through LAN or WAN transmission. The CIMs are available in PS/2, USB, Sun and Sun USB versions.

The Dominion KX232 includes a local port for setting up a KVM console at the rack itself, where it behaves like a traditional KVM switch. Remote connectivity allows two users with Web access to simultaneously troubleshoot or configure a server. Dua-failover 10/100 Ethernet ports ensure that if one Ethernet switch or interface card fails, the Dominion KX232 remains accessible. If the network connection goes down, the Dominion KX232 can be accessed via an external modem. Video performance is configured to match available bandwidth. Networks with a connection speed of 33 Kbps require 3-bit grayscale color depth.

Raritan Dominion SX
Raritan also manufactures the Dominion SX serial console server, which provides Web-based, serial-over-IP connectivity, granting local and remote access to serially managed network devices via SSH/Telnet or a Web browser. The SX series offers the same levels of security, authentication and encryption as Raritan's other KVM units and also features redundant power supplies and dual-LAN failover with a single IP address. The Dominion SX can not only manage servers but also power control units, UPSes, routers, hubs, switches, PBXs and other IT devices. CRN Test Center engineers evaluated the DSXA48, which has 48 serial ports and a built-in V.90 modem. The DSXA48 costs $4,500.

The device connects to other IT devices using Ethernet cable that plugs into a network device's serial management port via DB9-to-Ethernet adapters. The DSXA48 is fully scalable and can be managed centrally. A local console port is used for emergency access.

Raritan's channel program separates partners into levels based on the value-adds and services resellers provide to their customers, including pre- and post-sales support, demand generation and resources committed to KVM sales. Partners have access to MDF for certification, education, training, marketing and sales activities, as well as access to Raritan's dedicated local account representatives, post-sales support and a dedicated partner Web site. Authorization requirements include annual purchase commitments, industry and vertical market expertise and training. Training is available in person and over the Web.

StarTech Server Remote Control KVM-OVER-IP
KVMs typically access only the keyboard, video and mouse ports on a server and are not normally used to physically access a server for troubleshooting or rebooting purposes. StarTech's Server Remote Control KVM Control over IP device that allows administrators to do just that. The SV1110IPPCI is a self-contained KVM system on a PCI card installed inside a server in an empty PCI slot.

A breakout connector on the back of the KVM card houses keyboard, video, USB and mouse ports, and these connect to the matching ports on the server the card is installed in. The card also has a separate power input. WAN and LAN ports allow the card to be accessed remotely. Jumpers on the card attach it to a server's ATX power supply and reset button or to a non-ATX server's power and reset buttons. The internal KVM card powers up independently of the server it's installed in and obtains an IP address either manually or via DHCP.

With the KVM card installed in a server, administrators have BIOS-level control via a Web browser, and they can reset, reboot and monitor the server's boot process from anywhere in the world. Security is provided by standard 128-bit SSL encryption, and the card provides full cross-platform and multiple operating system support. Access is controlled by user ID and SSL password encryption.

StarTech's two-level channel program includes the Advantage Partner Program and the Platinum Partner Program. Sales volume determines a partner's designation. Both levels receive lifetime live technical support, and the Advantage Partner Program includes a dedicated account manager and free product training. The Platinum Partner Program offers all the benefits of the Advantage Program plus priority technical support, a listing in StarTech's where-to-buy database and volume product discounts. Online training is available to all partners, although larger resellers can request on-site training.
