Start It Off
CRN's monthly roundup of big executive moves saw some major activity for May, including a new CEO for Intel, a major enterprise shift for HP and some channel chief changes at several top vendors.
Brian Krzanich
Intel's search for a new leader ended last month when it tapped longtime executive Brian Krzanich to succeed former CEO Paul Otellini, who retired after nine years at the helm of the world's largest chip maker. Krzanich, who began his career with Intel in 1982, has held a number of roles at the company, including vice president and general manager of Intel's manufacturing and supply chain business.
Mike Parrottino
In an effort to jump-start its enterprise business, HP appointed veteran channel executive Mike Parrottino to a new role: vice president of enterprise group channels volume sales. Parrottino, who has been with HP for nearly 25 years, most recently served as vice president and general manager of Americas channel marketing and SMB. In his new role, Parrottino will focus on improving pricing promotions and programs for HP enterprise partners.
Lisa Jackson
Apple made an interesting executive hire this month with the addition of Lisa Jackson, former head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Apple appointed Jackson as vice president of environmental initiatives, focusing on the technology giant's environmental practices, including the use of renewable energy for Apple's data centers. Jackson will be reporting directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Doug Smith
VMware channel executive Doug Smith has left the virtualization company to take a new position at Virtual Instruments, a San Jose, Calif.-based cloud startup. Smith will serve as vice president of global partner sales at Virtual Instruments. Smith spent 15 years at VMware and EMC, where he most recently served as VMware's vice president of partner strategy & operations.
David O'Callaghan
VMware has added former Cisco channel executive David O'Callaghan to its partner team. O'Callaghan takes over as VMware's senior vice president of Global Channels and Alliances, filling the void left by former channel chief Scott Aronson, who left the networking giant earlier this year. Prior to Cisco, O'Callaghan spent time at Hitachi Data Systems and also founded his own consulting firm before joining VMware.
Renee James
Along with appointing a new CEO in Brian Krzanich, Intel also named a new president: Renee James. A 25-year Intel veteran, James most recently served as executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Software and Services Group, where she managed the company's software subsidiaries, including McAfee and Wind River. Doug Fisher, formerly corporate vice president and general manager of Intel's System Software Division, will now head Intel's Software and Services Group.
Jon Rubinstein
Qualcomm added a big name to its board of directors last month in Jon Rubinstein. Known as the "Podfather" for his time at Apple running the company's successful iPod business, Rubinstein followed up his successful career at Apple as chairman and CEO of Palm before it was acquired by HP in 2010. He most recently served as senior vice president and general manager of HP's Palm Global Business Unit and senior vice president of product innovation before leaving HP last year.
Tom Lane
Salesforce.com fired a shot at rival Oracle last month with the hiring of open source database specialist Tom Lane to an unspecified position. Lane is a key contributor to the PostgreSQL, or Postgres, an open source database project that's viewed as a rival to Oracle's database software. A longtime open source advocate, Lane previously worked at Linux distributor Red Hat and Great Bridge, a PostgreSQL company.
Lars Dalgaard
SuccessFactors founder and SAP cloud computing head Lars Dalgaard left the software maker following a major reorganization of SAP's research and development business. Dalgaard joined SAP when the company acquired SuccessFactors last year and became head of SAP's newly formed Cloud Business Unit. Following his departure from SAP, Dalgaard joined venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
Jim Murrin
HP named Jim Murrin as its new treasurer, effective July 1. Murrin currently serves as HP's senior vice president of corporate development and corporate financial analytics, and will continue to hold that position. With his new duties, Murrin will manage HP's worldwide cash, debt, capital structure and other financial aspects and will continue to report to Cathie Lesjak, HP's executive vice president and chief financial officer.
Barry Williams
Comcast Business appointed veteran channel executive Barry Williams as its new senior director of indirect channel sales. Williams previously spent time in channel roles at Sun Microsystems and Okidata. He will take over at Comcast Business for Kevin Conmy, who was promoted to regional vice president of Comcast's Freedom Region. Williams most recently served as manager of the central division for Comcast Business' national sales group.
John DeRocker
Atlanta-based Stratos Management Systems has promoted John DeRocker to a newly created position of senior vice president of worldwide channels. DeRocker previously served as president of Nexus Information Systems, which was acquired by the private equity-backed Stratos last year. DeRocker will focus on the solution provider's international vendor and distributor relationships.
Bryan Wood
Fortinet made two big channel executive promotions in May. The first was advancement of Bryan Wood, who takes over the security appliance maker's U.S. channel chief position, filling part of the void left by Kendra Krause, Fortinet's former vice president of channel sales, who departed in April to take a similar position at Sophos. Wood most recently served as vice president of U.S. channel and mid-enterprise sales.
Peter Brant
Fortinet's second major promotion last month was for Peter Brant, who takes over as vice president of Americas for the security appliance company. Brant most recently served as vice president of Americas enterprise sales for Fortinet and previously worked as vice president of sales at Breach Security. He will fill the void left by Michael Valentine, Fortinet's former vice president of Americas sales and support, who departed the company to join Sophos.
Charles Giancarlo
Imperva added a new face to its board of directors. Veteran technology executive Charles Giancarlo joined the data security company's board. Giancarlo is currently a managing director of investment firm Silver Lake and also is a member of the boards of Accenture and Blue Jeans Network, and previously served as executive vice president and chief development officer at Cisco.
Steven Reese
Sigmanet has named its first-ever chief technology officer, adding longtime solution provider executive Steve Reese to its leadership team. Reese formerly served as senior vice president of technology, West Area, for Presidio Networked Solutions. Prior to joining Presidio, he spent time at Nexus Information Systems in a variety of roles. As Sigmanet's CTO, Reese will focus on the solution provider's presence in growing markets like cloud computing and big data.
Tim Schaaff
Sony has added ex-Apple executive Tim Schaaff to its board of directors. Schaaff currently serves as president of Sony Network Entertainment, joining the Japanese technology company in 2005 after nearly 15 years with Apple in a variety of roles, developing Apple's multimedia and realtime communications technologies such as QuickTime.
Simon Biddiscombe
QLogic saw a major leadership change last month as Simon Biddiscombe stepped down as president and CEO of the networking technology company. Biddiscombe took over as CEO of QLogic in 2010 and previously served the company as senior vice president and chief financial officer. QLogic is conducting a search for a permanent CEO; CFO Jean Hu will act as interim CEO until the search is complete.
Christine King
Qlogic made another executive move last month with the addition of Christine King to its board of directors. King, a veteran IT executive, spent more than 20 years at IBM in a variety of executive and management positions and currently serves as president and CEO of Standard Microsystems Corporation. She also previously served as president and CEO of AMI Semiconductor.
Serguei Beloussov
Acronis has brought back a familiar face to be its new CEO. Serguei Beloussov has taken over the cloud backup and recovery company, succeeding former CEO Alex Pinchev. Beloussov co-founded Acronis and has served on the company's board of directors since 2002 and was also named as the company's first president. In addition, Beloussov is chairman of the board of directors at Parallels, a hosting and cloud services firm.
Karen Delaney
Sophos has promoted channel executive Karen Delaney to the new post of channel director for Australia and New Zealand. Delaney joined Sophos in 2011 when the security company acquired Astaro, an enterprise firewall and unified threat management vendor, where she focused on Astaro's distribution channels. Prior to Astaro, Delaney served as a channel manager at SonicWall. In her current role, she'll be responsible for growing Sophos' partner ecosystem in the region.
Robert Daleo
Citrix added a new director to its board last month in Robert Daleo, best known for his work in the newspaper and media industries. Daleo served as vice chairman of Thomson Reuters in 2012 and executive vice president and CFO of the company for more than 12 years. Daleo first started with Thomson Newspapers in 1994 as senior vice president and CFO. Prior to that, he held various positions at McGraw-Hill and Automatic Data Processing.
Sherrie McAvoy
Sherrie McAvoy has joined the board of directors at Numerex, an enterprise machine-to-machine (M2M) technology company. McAvoy is a 30-year veteran of Deloitte & Touche and currently serves as an AERS (Audit and Enterprise Risk Services) partner at the global consulting firm. She has spent her entire career at Deloitte and has been a partner for the last 18 years.
Todd Palmer
Emulex added Todd Palmer to its executive team as head of worldwide sales for the company's Endace division. Emulex acquired Endace, which specializes in network visibility products, in December. Palmer previously spent time in sales positions at NetApp and Computer Associates. In his new position, he'll be responsible for driving sales and channel expansion for Endace.
Helle Huxley
Aquilent has named Helle Huxley as its new chief marketing officer. Huxley joins the cloud services firm from Management Concepts, a national training and development company, where she served as vice president of marketing. Before that, she spent time as head of marketing at FedSources, the consulting arm of Washington Management Group, and held management positions at Warner Bros. Television and Sony.
Jon Mathews
BridgePoint Technologies added Jon Mathews to its executive team as director of business operations. In the new role, Mathews will focus on the sales activity of the IT consulting firm's technology staffing and business solutions operations. Before joining BridgePoint, he served in several roles at Aerotek Staffing, including senior sales manager.
Maura Mahoney
Tech Valley Communications appointed Maura Mahoney as senior director of marketing and product management. A 20-year veteran of telecommunications marketing and product development, Mahoney previously served as head of marketing at Conterra Broadband Services and as vice president at Sidera Networks. In her new role, she'll lead all marketing initiatives for Tech Valley Communications and be charged with enhancing the telecom service provider's brand.
Patrick Sheehan
TorreyPoint named Patrick Sheehan as director of the solution provider's Advanced Services Business Unit. Sheehan previously spent time at Juniper Networks as a major account manager, where he oversaw the sales and technical engagement strategy with top customers in the U.S., Latin America and EMEA. Sheehan also worked at Cisco in account management positions.
Nick Lenaeus
Whitlock, an audio-visual solution provider, tapped Nick Lenaeus as its new regional director for the Carolinas. A 20-year veteran of the IT and telecom industries, Lenaeus formerly served as a regional sales head for Avaya's channel business and held other senior positions at the vendor. He also served several roles at Nortel Networks. In his new role, Lenaeus will oversee sales and services for North Carolina and South Carolina.
John Carpenter
Wintellect, a Microsoft-focused consulting and training firm, added 17-year Microsoft veteran John Carpenter to its executive team. Carpenter was named general manager of WintellectNOW, the company's new on-demand enterprise training service, which launched last month. Carpenter most recently served as senior director of U.S. marketing excellence for the software giant, where he focused on U.S. commercial customer engagement.
