Commvault Expands Partnership With Cisco
Just days after launching its HyperScale appliance and software, data protection player Commvault inked a deal with Cisco Systems to market a combined offering on Cisco's Unified Computing System.
ScaleProtect with Cisco UCS is the first offering with the HyperScale software reference architecture, and it Commvault said it promises seamless integration with storage arrays, hypervisors, applications and cloud offerings.
ScaleProtect with Cisco UCS aims to give enterprise customers a simple, integrated solution for managing secondary data in a cloud-like, on-premises solution. Commvault argues ScaleProtect with Cisco UCS allows customers to replace "costly existing point solutions that do not scale and lack visibility into secondary data."
ScaleProtect with Cisco UCS is intended to build on Commvault's HyperScale cloud infrastructure solution, which was launched recently and is marketed as an appliance and a software-only reference architecture.

The Channel Play
ScaleProtect with Cisco UCS is available through Cisco's SolutionsPlus channel partner program, as well as direct from Cisco. The arrangement means Commvault has joined the SolutionsPlus program with an eye toward making it easy for Cisco partners to sell the ScaleProtect solution.
The Challenge
The offering is intended to help midmarket and enterprise customers deal with dramatic growth in the amount of data they must store, manage and analyze, as well as the constant security threats that data faces. Commvault's platform defends against the growing list of security threats, while remaining flexible enough so customers can reliably manage data stored in data centers and in the cloud.
Building It In
ScaleProtect with Cisco UCS combines scale-out infrastructure with data management and protection, which allows for data center consolidation. Theoffering promises agility, resiliency and availability of data and applications on-premises or in the cloud. It includes the Commvault Data Platform's high availability and disaster recovery, including automation, orchestration and self-service capabilities.
Support System
The offering is able to grow along with customers through what Commvault calls "nondisruptive" capacity and performance expansion, as well as streamlined support and centralized patch management and monitoring. ScaleProtect with Cisco UCS allows customers to start small and seamlessly scale to Petabytes of capacity.
Growing The Commvault-Cisco Relationship
The ScaleProtect offering builds upon on an existing relationship between Commvault and Cisco that includes data management, protection and optimization on UCS, as well as Cisco's HyperFlex hyper-converged infrastructure offering and FlashStack converged infrastructure offering, which also includes technology from Pure Storage. ScaleProtect is billed as an alternative to existing scale-out offerings that Commvault says have "failed to deliver on expectations.’
