The Future Is Thin

Solution providers take note: Thin is in for the laptop world. While laptops as a whole are finding dimming prospects, interest from mobile workers in having a thin, ultra-portable device appears to be one bright spot. As a result, Windows laptop makers are working to outdo each other at having the thinnest new offering on the market, while even Apple is rumored to be working on a thinner version of its MacBook Pro.

To give a sense of what's out there, the CRN Test Center has rounded up eight of the thinnest laptops on the market right now. The laptops were introduced (or refreshed) either some time in 2016 or toward the end of 2015. All are 0.6 of an inch or thinner, and we've ordered them by thickness, from high to low, in the slides that follow. We've also included the starting price and available processors for each model.

Dell XPS 13

Thickness: 0.6 of an inch

Refreshed in late 2015, the XPS 13 is a laptop for professionals and consumers that's both powerful and stylish.

Dell Latitude 13 7370

Thickness: 0.56 of an inch

New in 2016, this laptop is aimed at business-class users who are looking for a combination of durability, portability and horsepower.

Samsu ng Notebook 9

Thickness: 0.53 of an inch (for lowest-end model)

Processor: Intel Core i5 or i7

Starting price: $999

New in 2016, this laptop pairs a MacBook Pro-like look with a Windows OS, and boasts a large screen (15 inches) while also being very portable.

Apple MacBook

Thickness: 0.52 of an inch

Processor: Intel Core m3, m5 or m7

Starting price: $1,299

Refreshed in April 2016, this laptop is the most portable Mac to date, as Apple's thinnest and lightest Mac, and has also been updated with new processors and body finishes.

Asus ZenBook UX305FA

Thickness: 0.5 of an inch

Processor: Intel Core m3, m5 or m7

Launched in 2016, this version of the ZenBook is aimed at customers who are looking for a powerful portable device with plenty of design considerations.

Lenovo Yoga 900S

Thickness: 0.5 of an inch

This new version of the Yoga 900 is aimed at being ultra-portable and ultra-flexible, with numerous different ways to get work done on the go.

HP EliteBook Folio G1

The ultra-slim Folio G1 made its debut in 2016, and is aimed at mobile professionals who are used to lots of multitasking.

HP Spectre 13

Thickness: 0.41 of an inch

Processor: Intel Core i5 or i7

Starting price: $1,169
