Dell EMC And NetApp Dominate All-Flash Array Market

All-flash storage array vendors are generating significantly more sales through the channel, according to new first-quarter 2018 data from The NPD Group, Port Washington, N.Y. The NPD Group tracks monthly technology sales information from the largest IT distributors and resellers in North America.

The total all-flash storage market generated $211 million for the quarter, up from $152 million year over year, representing a 40 percent increase. Dell EMC saw the biggest spike in all-flash sales compared to the same quarter one year ago, while IBM recorded the largest revenue decline. 6. Tintri

Dollar Share: 1.2 Percent

Tintri captured $2.5 million in all-flash array sales during the quarter, up 2.6 percent year over year. The Mountain View, Calif.-based vendor's dollar share was roughly flat at 1.2 percent share compared to the same quarter one year ago.

5. IBM

Dollar Share: 1.3 Percent

IBM's all-flash revenues dropped 40 percent year over year during the first quarter. Big Blue generated $2.7 million in sales in the quarter, down from the $4.6 million it captured in the same quarter one year ago. The Armonk, N.Y.-based company grabbed 1.3 percent dollar share, down from the 3 percent share it held one year earlier.

4. Pure Storage

Dollar Share: 7.9 Percent

Pure generated $16.8 million in all-flash revenues through the channel, up nearly 75 percent compared to the $9.6 million in sales during the same quarter one year ago. The Mountain View, Calif.-based company's dollar share jumped from a 6.3 percent share in the first quarter 2017 to 7.9 percent share.

3. HPE

Dollar Share: 10.7 Percent

Hewlett Packard Enterprise captured $22.6 million in all-flash sales through the channel, down 24 percent year over year, which includes sales from Nimble, which HPE acquired in April, 2017. Palo Alto, Calif.-based HPE's dollar share of the market declined from 19.7 percent in the first quarter of 2017 to 10.7 percent.

2. NetApp

Dollar Share: 30.3 Percent

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based NetApp saw the biggest decline in dollar share in the quarter from 45.4 percent in the first quarter of 2017 to a 30.3 percent share in this year's first quarter. NetApp's all-flash revenues topped $64.2 million, down 7 percent year over year. The company had three of the top-ten most popular all-flash products sold during the quarter, including its AFF A200 Flash Bundle system, which was the third most sold product by volume for the quarter.

1. Dell EMC

Dollar Share: 43.6 Percent

The Round Rock, Tex.-based infrastructure giant generated $92.2 million in all-flash sales during the quarter, up 212 percent year over year. Dell EMC's dollar share of the market jumped from 19.5 percent to 43.6 percent compared to the same quarter one year ago. Dell EMC had six of the top 10 most popular all-flash products sold during the quarter in terms of volume, with its 950 FC Array being the biggest selling storage solution in the channel.
